Two wins and two losses for Kerry's cricket teams at weekend

Micm Jones - Cricket

Kerry's unsettled 2019 continued through a hectic weekend, which saw all four squads in action. The first and fourth elevens both lost their league fixtures, but the second and third teams progressed in T20 tournaments to reach their respective Finals Day in Cork. In the T20 round-robin eliminators of three sides, each squad plays two matches in the day, so for Kerry Cricket Club this weekend, that meant six matches in two days.

Munster Cricket Division 3

At Spa on Saturday, Kerry 4th squad never really threatened to chase down the modest target of 129 set by the visitors from Limerick.

Both Michael Picket (6-1-20-4) and Prince Thomas (7.3- 2-26-3) bowled with control in uncomfortably breezy conditions, but the good work done by the Kerry bowling attack was trumped by Limerick's Stephen Cheatley, who led the way in restricting the home team to a lack-lustre total of 81; Cheatley's match-winning five wicket haul of 6.4-2-14-5 was easily the outstanding performance of the day.

Kerry 4th XI lost to Limerick 4th XI by 48 runs. Limerick: 129a.o.; Kerry: 81a.o..

Munster Cricket Premier Division (match reduced to 20 overs)

On Sunday, Limerick and Kerry met at Adare in a Munster Premier Division match between the first elevens.

The showery weather forced over reductions and eventually a twenty-twenty contest went ahead. Batting first, Kerry posted a highly respectable 143, but were beaten by three wickets as Limerick got home with three balls to spare.

For Limerick, former Kerry and Munster Reds all-rounder Arslan Anwar dominated the match, striking 60 with the bat and taking two Kerry wickets for 22 runs.

Limerick 1st XI beat County Kerry 1st XI by 3 wickets. Kerry: 143a.o.; Limerick 144 for 7.

Munster Cricket Division 1 - T20 Blast Eliminator. (Adare)

Kerry seconds win over Limerick Blasters was enough to secure a place in the Junior T20 Blast Finals day, posting a healthy 153-5 the Kerry bowlers proceeded to restrict the Blasters to 133 for 7 off their full twenty overs to secure a 20 run victory and a berth at the finals day at the Mardyke in Cork.

Munster Cricket Division 2 - T20 Eliminator. (Oyster Oval, Spa)

The Division 2 T20 eliminator was hosted by Kerry with the round-robin sequence played out by Limerick 3rds, Cork Harlequin 3rds and Kerry 3rds.

After sparkling early morning preparations the rain arrived at The Oyster Oval reducing the first match (Kerry v Limerick) from 20 overs each to just 15. Kerry posted a total of 79, maybe 20 runs short of what they would have liked. But no matter, the Kerry bowling attack never let the Limerick batters settle and they were restricted to 57.

Kerry 3rd XI beat Limerick 3rd XI by 22 runs. Kerry: 79-7; Limerick 57-5.
