Silver lining for PJ Galvin who medals at National Combined event in Athlone
LAST weekend was all about the new Indoor Athletics arena in Athlone. On Saturday the first competitive competitions to be held at the magnificent new facility were the National Combined events.
It was a great day for PJ Galvin (St. Brendan's) who won his first national senior medal when taking silver in the Senior Men's event. PJ had a great set of results over the five disciplines with his 1.94m in the High Jump being the highlight.
Kerry's only other competitor was Kieran O'Doherty (Spa-Muckross) who finished eighth in the U-14 Boys. Kieran was in contention throughout this competition which had a huge entry with his 1.39m High Jump being the second best of the day.
On Sunday it was back to Athlone for the A.A.I Indoor Games which provided some great competition for the 350 or so competitors who were eager to try out the new track.
Incorporated in the programme was the National Senior 56lbs for Distance. The evergreen Patsy O'Connor (Tralee Harriers) continued his amazing record in championships when winning the Bronze medal with a throw of 6.75m.
Other Kerry Athletes who got their seasons off to good starts were Eoghan Courtney (St. Brendan's) in the 200m and William O'Connor (An Ríocht) in the 400m. Both are still Junior Athletes and will benefit from the experience.
The unluckiest athlete of the day was Laura Crowe (An Ríocht) who was brought down when a fellow competitor fell just yards from the finish line.
