Tarbert-based junior rally driver Mossie Costello made history on Saturday by becoming the first Kerry driver to win a Junior 1000 Rally in Ireland.
he Junior 1000 category is open to junior drivers under the age of 18. They compete in 1000cc rally cars in the Irish Forestry Rally Championship and Saturday’s Ballyvourney-based event was the third round of the 2022 series.
Costello, driving a Peugeot 107, snatched the event lead on the final stage after long-time leader Jack Brennan hit trouble.
“It was unbelievable to take the win. We were happy to be up to second going into the last stage but to find out we took the win at the finish line was breath-taking,” said Costello.
“The Moonraker was my first rally back in 2019 and to take the win on only my second time doing that rally felt amazing.
"My next rally will be in six weeks’ time, the Cork Forestry Rally which is the last round of the championship.”
The overall rally was on by Keith Cronin and Killarney’s Mikie Galvin. The Volkswagen Polo RC2 crew were using the event as a shakedown for the next round of the British Rally Championship.
The crew are the current leaders of the British series ahead of this weekend’s Nicky Grist Rally in Wales.
