Top honours for O'Shea and Conway
For the first time ever the top two performers in the Higher Education Championships - the Sigerson Cup Football Championship and the Fitzgibbon Cup Hurling Championship - were Kerry men.
Both men lined out for UCC in respective codes and both men won the plaudits of pundits and peers alike. Kenmare's Seán O'Shea claimed the football award, while Lixnaw's Shane Conway took the hurling equivalent.
On the football team of the year an additional four Kerry men made the grade including Kerry pannelists Brian Ó Beaglaoich (An Ghaeltacht) and Graham O'Sullivan (Dromid Pearses). The other award winners were Daniel O'Brien (Glenflesk) and Pádraig Lucey (Legion).
Congratulating the winners, GAA President John Horan said:
"Over the last number of years it has become a real statement of intent from young players involved at third level football and hurling championships that the form they show here is a sign of things to come at inter-county level".
