UNDER-13s: County League Division 6 semi-final: GGC 0-3, Ballyduff 3-8

The GGC under-13s travelled to Ballyduff for a Division 6 semi-final on Sunday evening.

It was a tough evening for an understrength side with the home side proving to be too good.

Still, it was another learning experience for our players who have performed admirably in.phase two of the county league.

GGC have another semi-final provisionally fixed for this Friday, this time in Division 16, where they are scheduled to host Fossa B in Cromane at 6pm. Best of luck lads!

Div.3 Hurling Dr.Crokes 1-06 St. Brendan’s 2-15. Our second team met St. Brendan’s on Friday evening in the Division 3 league final in Caherslee. We were well in the game, just two points behind, up to the half time break but following a red card given to one of our better and more experienced players early in the second half our well supported opponents upped their game and put us to the sword with a final score line of St Brendan’s 2.15 Dr Crokes 1.06. Still, a good learning experience for our lads who now look forward to the Junior Championship. Great to see a father and son, Paul and Brandon Griffin playing with us in the game. Brandon was one of our better performers on the night and another player, Joe McCann, who recently transferred to us from the hurling stronghold of County Louth gave a fine performance as well. Congratulations to our very sporting opponents on their fine win.

U13 Our U13 boys put on a great display of skills with a big win over Kenmare Shamrocks at home last Wednesday evening. Dr.Crokes B 3-11 Kenmare Shamrocks B 0-05. They have now qualified for the final.

U12 Girls Our U12 girls were in action last Tuesday evening against a very strong Kilcummin side in the county league. After a great battle Kilcummin deservedly took the spoils. We were delighted with our girls who are continuing to show huge improvements since the beginning of the season. There is a bright future for these hard working enthusiastic ladies! Well done.

GO GAMES Our U9 hurlers played Firies away from home. There were some great displays of skills on a lovely night for hurling. Our U7 hurlers were also out for their first game of the season. It was a great night for all making their debut in the black and amber.

Dylan Crowley Memorial Tournament: Glenflesk u11’s performed brilliantly last Saturday in Gneevguilla, in the Dylan Crowley Memorial Tournament. Placed in a group with Firies, Cordal and Listry, they beat Cordal in the opening game, lost to Firies in the second, and beat Listry in their third. This placed them in second place in the group. This meant another showdown with Listry in the semifinal. This was the game of the day. Listry got off to a fast start with two first half goals. Glenflesk fought back well in the second half, and at the end of 20 minute’s the sides couldn’t be separated. Early goals for each side meant that the result went down to the last kick. Glenflesk were awarded a last minute free, which was brilliantly converted, giving them a place in the final. Firies were the opponents in the final. After a close first half, Firies held a one point lead. They pushed on in the second half for a deserved victory. The Glenflesk team still got medals for their outstanding performance, and their semifinal win will live long in the memory. Congratulations to the team and mentors on their heroic efforts today. Report by Michael Healy.

County League phase 2 Division 7B: A superb performance from Glenflesk u 13’s brought them the victory against Rathmore in round 3 of The County League phase 2 Division 7B. The team were at it right from the start with superb blocking and defending denying Rathmore early on. They then attacked with real purpose, with Liam McCarthy, Mark Bowler and Roan Guerin all getting great scores. Even though Rathmore fought back strongly in the second half, Glenflesk held on for a well-deserved win. Congratulation’s to the team and management on this great win. Team. 1. SENIOR MEN: Round 10 of Division 1 of the County League sees us travel to Connolly Park this Saturday June 25th with a 7pm throw in. With the win over Rathmore almost guaranteeing Division 1 status next year the focus will be to build on the good form with the Intermediate Championship on the horizon. A good performance against the County Champions Austin Stacks will certainly add to the momentum. A reminder that we are in the same group as Laune Rangers, John Mitchels and Dromid Pearses for the Intermediate competition. The Senior B team are also in action Saturday evening when Dingle B make their way to Killarney. Throw in for this one is also 7pm.

JUVENILE BOYS: The U11 Boys had a particularly busy week with their highlight being involved in the Dylan Crowley Tournament, which was a huge success in Gneeveguilla last Saturday. A big bualadh bos to Sean the Bear O’Sullivan and his committee for the fantastic job they did after a 3 year Covid enforced absence. Our lads were in the same pool as Gneeveguilla, Currow and Kilgarvan and we made the final where we faced Currow. Having visited them in the Go Games only 48 hours previously again there wasn’t much between the sides but it was Currow who emerged victorious. The lads will have enjoyed the experience of playing different oppositions all on the one day and gave their all. It was a privilege for them to be involved and remember Dylan in the best possible way.

Both U13 Boys teams, Green and White, were in semi final action Sunday evening. The Green team qualified for the County League Division 2 final where they will play Firies. This was as a result of a 5-19 to 3-11 victory over Na Gaeil in a blustery Direen on Sunday evening. The ground work was done in the first half as they held a seven point half time lead, 3-10 to 2-6, an advantage they drove on in the second half. The White Team, having won all their phase 1 games were placed in a higher grouping for Phase 2. In general they managed the step up well where they often met another club’s A team. The beauty of these competitions is that over 30 players saw quality and quantity game time and no doubt will improve in the process. The U15 Boys are back in action after a break to allow them concentrate on the State Examinations.

The East Kerry League kicks off this week and the lads are at home in Round 1 when they will face Rathmore on Wednesday June 22nd with a 7pm throw-in. In the same group as Keel/ Listry they will face them on Wednesday June 29th and the remaining games in Division 1 will be against Dr Crokes and Kenmare Shamrocks. The U17 Boys will play Gneeveguilla on Monday June 27th in the final game of the East Kerry League. They will be looking to keep up their unbeaten run in the competition with a place in the final looming.

LADIES UPDATE: The U12 Girls made it 3 wins in a row , to follow up their recent wins over Scartaglin and Rathmore. This time they beat Inbhear Sceine Gaels by 3-4 to 2-5 in Direen. Kerins O Rahillys who have put in some useful performances themselves are the next visitors to Direen.Firies made the trip to Direen on Sunday and came away with the spoils, but not without a fight from our U14 White team. The wind was a factor as it allowed the Farranfore girls the chance to build up a comfortable half time lead. The Legion girls came out all guns blazing early in the second half, hitting 1-2, but Firies steadied the ship again to run out 2-12 to 1-9 winners. The U16 and minors should also see a return to the playing fields in the week ahead with two semi finals to look forward to.

SARAH LEAHY: The rise of Sarah Leahy continues to gather pace, literally, as she has been very busy in recent weeks. Trips to Belgium , Athens and Geneva on the international track and field circuit saw her record her second fastest 100 metres time (11.70) ever while she has also been racing with the Irish 4 x 100 relay team. The ultimate goal of course will be to make that team for the World Athletics Championship in Oregon in July. We wish Sarah all the best in the weeks ahead , exciting times for the Killarney Valley Athletics Club.

DEEPEST SYMPATHIES: We pass on our condolences to the family of Tom O’Leary who passed away during the week. The O’Leary family have a long connection with the club and of course the late John, Tom’s father and former TD, lived just a stones throw from Direen. May He Rest in Peace.
