Clare Fitzgerald from Tralee Harriers won her fourth senior shot putt title competing at the Woodies DIY Senior Indoor Championships in the AIT International Arena.

Her throw of 14.95m was a new stadium record and a new personal best - improving on her all-time throw of 14.75m.

Fitzgerald has also been selected for the European Winter Throws Championships, which will be held in Portugal on March 15 and 16.

Kerry's only other medal of the weekend came from Sinead O'Connor, also from Tralee Harriers, who was third in the triple jump.

Elsewhere, there were several Kerry successes at the Munster Schools Cross Country Championships at CIT Cork last week. Laura Hallissey (Kenmare AC) came 4th in the Intermediate girls and Sean Horan from An Riocht was 3rd in the minor boys.

From Lios Tuathail, Darragh Browne was 4th in intermediate boys and Aoife Mahony 12th in the intermediate girls. All four athletes now go on to the all-Ireland finals on March 8 at the same venue.

Meanwhile, the Tralee International Marathon race organisers put on a great St Valentine's Day 10-mile race last Saturday in which some 700 runners took part in.

The event was won by Robert Purcell in a time of 57:25, less than a minute ahead of Pat Dunworth in second place and Billy O'Brien in third.

The first woman across the line was Anna Maria Costelloe in 1:03:29. Catriona Barry was second lady and Alison Kirwan was third.

There is less than a month to go now to the Tralee International Marathon on Sunday March 16.

This event, which attracted a huge field last year, incorporates the Kerry Athletics half and full marathon championships. Registration is open until February 23. See
