One year ago next Sunday, August 21, Eileen Cronin left this world to join Mike Joe who passed away just over a year earlier. Eileen was one of a kind and kind was a word that was synonymous with Eileen. She loved Moyvane, she loved Kerry football and was involved in everything that was good in this parish. In the sixties she was part of the Drama Group that competed at Drama Festivals all over Ireland and won many All Irelands, The Open in Athlone, The Macra, the Oireachtas and finally the group made it to the Peacock and the Abbey Theatres in Dublin. Not many groups had that distinction. There were many Best Actress awards.

She was part of Moyvane Bingo for, probably, 40 years and by God was she good at what she did and was she loved by everyone that came to Bingo? They thought there was no one like Eileen and they were right. She called back the numbers at Bingo on the night, paid the buses, paid the prize money and then, in her own time, sorted all the money. It now takes two people to do what she did! She is not forgotten and is remembered and talked about every Thursday night.

Personally, I miss her every day of every week. She was my go to person. She would be so proud of Kerry winning another All Ireland this year. Darragh O’Shea was her favourite player and one of her prized possessions was a picture of Darragh signing his book for her in Brosnan’s Bar. Don’t forget her First Anniversary Mass will be celebrated this Sunday at 11.00am.

‘A Leap Of Faith Challenge’

A Leap of Faith Chgallenge will take place on Sunday, August 21 in Croke Park. This is an Absail fundraiser for Kerry Cancer Support Group. Two local ladies, Brenda Kennelly & Frances Leahy are being daredevils for this worthy cause and would appreciate your support.

Perhaps you are not familiar with this group, then let me fill you in. Their motto is: no one should face their cancer journey alone: Kerry Cancer Support is devoted to maintaining a warm, welcoming environment while ensuring that service users have immediate access to our free programmes and resources. Our professional staff strive to help people affected by cancer in a way that is as supportive and helpful as possible to achieve the highest quality of life.

Kerry Cancer Support is a community-supported volunteer-driven community-supported organisation. Their Health Link Transport was established 10 years ago to provide essential transport services to and from Cork to enable cancer patients to attend appointments to receive treatment.

To date this 100% voluntary funded organisation has provided transport for over 3,000 service users who have attended over 23,000 cancer related appointments. They need to keep two buses and a jeep on the road for treatment trips and the increase in fuel costs is creating a major problem for the service, increasing their costs by €20,000 this year alone! Every Euro will be lifesaving and appreciated beyond measure. Check out the ladies on iDonate or Facebook. Sponsorship cards can be found in Frances’ Hair salon or Kennelly’s Hardware shop.

Graveyard Mass

A very large crowd attended the open air mass in Scartaglen Graveyard on a beautiful August evening on Friday last. Fr. Mossie Brick PP Castleisland celebrated the mass. The large gathering was indicative of the love and affection that people have for their loved ones who have passed away and are no longer with us. Our local graveyard is a credit to all who look after it. It’s in a beautiful setting and is maintained in pristine condition, it’s up to people individually to keep it in that condition and hopefully that’ll be the case. Scartaglen Graveyard Committee wish to thank all who contributed to their collection at the above mass. A sum of €2080.70 was collected on the evening and that is quite close to the committee target and they are very pleased with the response overall to their appeal for contributions which will go towards the upkeep of the cemetery. They also wish to thank all who helped in any way for the staging of the mass.
