The increase in fuel costs is creating a major problem for the service, increasing their costs by €20,000 this year alone! Every Euro will be lifesaving and appreciated beyond measure. Scartaglen Graveyard Committee would like to thank all those people who helped to get much work done in the local graveyard, all of which was voluntary as without their help this work would not have been possible. They want to make people aware of this as some people think the work carried is carried out by K.C.C.
Firstly they want to thank Councillor Charlie Farrelly who sponsored the light and pole outside the graveyard at the bend. This was badly needed and it even gave light into the graveyard and it helped to get Liam McCarthy and his helpers who do not want to be named on board to bring light to the grotto which is excellent in the winter time and was badly needed especially in the new part of the graveyard.
The Committee again have done great work this year especially over the last few weeks and they want to thank those who prepared the area for the new path Danny and Den Joe O Connell and Mike Fitzgerald who removed and disposed of the excess rubbish and Jerry Brosnan who gave his machine to clear it away. Jerry Brosnan and one of his workers, John O Connor took the day off to lay the path with the help of Danny Horan who worked with them to get the job done voluntarily, otherwise it would not have been possible and it is hoped that people would appreciate this.
The Committee paid for all the materials for every job done and not K.C.C. All walls inside and outside at the front of the graveyard have been cleaned and painted by the RSS workers, also all planters cleaned, painted and planted by Sheila. They want to thank those few people who turned up on the day or evening of clean up and brushed paths, cleaned seats and benches and the grotto. A special word of thanks to Dan Casey who spent much time cleaning footpaths etc and this has been greatly appreciated.
The Committee are very proud of all the work they have undertaken since they began and they are hoping that the graveyard will be maintained to a high standard by all. They are asking everyone to take home all rubbish, flowers, wreaths and plastic bottles and cigarette butts which have been dumped in several areas. There is open air mass at the graveyard on this Friday evening August 12 at 8pm. A gate collection will be held and the committee are asking for support this year as they want to pay for all materials used by Eilish and Sheila. A grant of E1,000 by no means covers the cost of jobs done and materials used. The Committee cannot keep relying on volunteers and if anyone wants to help out with donations or contributions, they should contact any committee member. Graveyard Committee members: Eilish Moynihan, Sheila McSweeney, Donie McCarthy and Owen McSweeney. They are all volunteers who cannot clean the graves of others as this is peoples own personal responsibility. They hope to continue doing any jobs that they see necessary to be done, but these jobs cannot be done without funds and there are continuous bills for electricity etc. Thanks again to everyone who has helped in any way, keep up the good work and if anyone sees anything that needs to be sorted, please talk to the caretaker or any member of the committee. Míle buíochas arís!
