Local handballer Pat Lacey has been in the winners enclosure a few times over the last few years but his career in the game reached dizzy heights at Broadford in Limerick on Friday night when he won a Munster title which is a phenomenal achievement.

The well–known Asdee East man might be on the wrong side of the half century mark but he is still a great handballer and is excelling in the Munster Diamond Masters Competition.

His partner in the doubles competition was Ballymac man Dermot Casey and they have proved to be a great partnership who beat some of the best handballers in the province to progress to the Munster Final.

They faced a formidable Cork duo who were red hot favourites for the final as they have captured a number of Munster titles over the past few years.

However the Kerry lads had no fears of their illustrious opponents and they went into the game in a confident frame of mind and deep down they knew if they played to their full potential they were well capable of bringing off a surprise result.

A Kerry v Cork confrontation added to the appeal of the clash and the `Kerry lads were determined to try and fashion a Kerry win but they knew it would take a huge effort to bring it to fruition.

The Corkonians came out with all guns blazing and they raced into an 11 point lead and things were looking very precarious for Kerry. However they steadied the ship as the game progressed making their opponents work hard and went on to outscore them to win 21–15

Their opponents came out for the second game and dominated the early part of it and went into a 15 5 lead and it looked as if it was curtains for the Kerry pair.

However they dug deep changing their tactics and began to hit their opponents where it hurt. Pat Lacey’s serves were causing major problems for their opponents and he registered 15 points without a reply while Casey was playing excellent as well and they clinched the title in great style. The achievement of both players was more significant as they were nursing injuries going into the final.

The referee for the game was World Champion Martina Mc Mahon from Broadford who done an excellent job.

A lot of people from the Asdee area were employed at the German factory in the late 1970 and 80’s and all during the 80’s and 90’s.

When Precision engineering went upmarket the factory closed in the early 90’s which was a great loss to Listowel and surrounding areas.
