Valentia Cable Station receives additional funding
It has been confirmed the restoration project at Valentia Cable Station will receive additional funding of €30,000 from the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs.
The announcement was made last Thursday (November 17) by Minister Heather Humphreys. The funding is in addition to the €20,000 which was already provided to the project through the Structures at Risk Fund 2016, meaning the Department will now have total funding of €50,000 for the project.
The station was regarded as the primary communications hub for transatlantic telegraphy on this side of the Atlantic Ocean for decades, before it closed in 1966.
The restoration plan includes an innovation centre, and a ground floor museum exhibiting items collected by superintendent James Graves.
The announcement of additional funding has been welcomed by Deputy Brendan Griffin.
