Over 50 repossession cases before court

Over 50 people and families who are threatened with having their homes repossessed will come before the court in Tralee next week.

On Thursday January 18 at Tralee Circuit Civil Court 53 separate repossession cases - involving individuals, couples and families - are listed for hearing and discussion before the County Registrar.

The cases on the court's 'Repo List' involve Irish various banks and mortgage lenders including Bank of Ireland, AIB, EBS, Ulster Bank and Permanent TSB. Other cases on the list involve the sub-prime lender Start Mortgages; AIB subsidiary Haven Mortgages and Shoreline DAC an affiliate of US 'vulture fund' Lone Star.

The number of repossession cases before the courts in Kerry has dropped significantly compared to previous years.

In 2011, 18 Kerry homeowners were fighting the repossession of their homes in the courts. This increased to 65 in 2014 and 77 in 2016 before reaching a peak of 107 actions in 2016. Court figures for 2016 - the most recent available - show that 21 properties, including 15 homes, were repossessed in Kerry that year.
