THEY may be rivals on the pitch, but organisers of Ardfert GAA Club's hugely successful Ardfert Idol were thrilled to award the top prize to a young woman from Lixnaw when the votes were cast at Friday night's event.

Megan Sheehy from Lixnaw wowed judges Michael Healy Rae, Margaret Brick and Donal Flaherty with her stunning cover of the Amy Winehouse hit Valerie to take the title, but only after a sing-off with Ardfert's own answer to One Direction - Nicky O'Sullivan, Mairtín Ferris, Chris Sheehan, Trevor Wallace and David Culloty.

The event was organised by Ardfert juvenile club chairman, Stephen Wallace, to raise funds for the juvenile football club, and speaking after the event he said he was absolutely thrilled with its success.

"We had over 400 in attendance and 24 performers on the night and the standard was just amazing," he said. "The feedback we received was fantastic and I'm still getting people stopping me on the streets wondering if we're going to do it again next year. We've been just blown away by the response"

Paying tribute to everyone who showed up on the night, and especially the performers, Stephen said that the support Ardfert GAA club received from neighbouring parishes was incredible.

"The overall prize went to a Lixnaw girl which proved the support we got from elsewhere. We night be rivals on the pitch both at hurling and football, but it proves that what happens on the pitch stays there and we can all come together to support each other for things like this, which is brilliant."

And as for Ardfert Idol 2015? It's fair to say it's a safe bet..

"It's all about raising money for the kids and we are planning already for next year. In fact it's going to be even bigger and better," Stephen said.
