There's more than one reason for a local cheerleading club in Killarney to be celebrating these days after they secured a spot at a prestigious cheerleading championship event in Florida later this year.

Managers and supporters of the 'Scorchers All Stars' club in Killarney are on the fundraising trail as they look to raise enough money for each athlete's flights, and competition & training uniforms ahead of 'The Summit' Cheerleading Championships at the ESPN Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida, in May 2018.

The Killarney team, who are European champions and Paid Bid winners, received an invite to compete in the US-based championship.

"This is the first time ever that an Irish team has won such an offer and we can't allow financial constraints to stop this talented team from competing at the championships," said fundraising co-ordinator for the trip, Margaret Dineen.

"We have 20 athletes in our team for the championship ranging from our younger athletes aged 10 to the older ones aged between 16 and 17," she continued.

"We have fabulous kids taking part that are just oozing personality and they are just fun and a joy to watch. This is a huge event for all of them - for some it will be their first time in the USA and performing at an international event - an amazing achievement for girls of such a young age," she finished.

For anyone looking to find out more about the Cheer club and getting involved, direct enquiries can be sent to the club's 'Killarney Scorchers Cheerleading' group on Facebook.
