Listowel ready to roll out the red Presidential carpet

Listowel is already reporting a distinct boost in trade on the back of being crowned Ireland's Tidiest Town, but the publicity is to get even greater as President Michael D Higgins arrives to mark the achievement on Saturday, May 25 next.

Details of the Presidential schedule were revealed this week in an event set to involve every school in the town. He arrives at 11.30am to the Square, before a ceremony in St John's to be MC'd by one of two of the longest-serving Tidy Towns stalwarts in the town: Mary Hanlon. Also speaking at the event will be Tidy Towns chairperson Julie Gleeson, Listowel Municipal Cathaoirleach Mike Kennelly as well as, of course, President Higgins.

"Following the ceremony he will unveil a plaque in a new sculpture by Darren Enright before the event moves to the Seanchaí for refreshments and further musical performances," Mary explained.

"This is just a wonderful occasion for Listowel with Nationwide down to film the whole event at a time of increased trade following the win," Mary said.
