Worrying scenes of young people revelling in large numbers in Kilkee were replicated across the Shannon Estuary in Kerry over the weekend, on an albeit smaller scale.

A group of up to 50 youths were moved off the beaches of Ballybunion late on Saturday night by gardaí policing anti-social behaviour and public health restrictions over the August Bank Holiday weekend in the popular seaside destination.

The youths were drinking and it is understood that damage was caused to Council property on the beach, including to a number of bins before gardaí arrived on scene to quickly clear the revellers.

Few were local, with most of the young people holidaying in the resort with family.

The incident occurred at the same time as large groups were partying on the beaches of Kilkee and Lahinch in Co Clare over the weekend - the former the subject of widespread concern as video footage emerged of the gathering, displaying no signs of social distancing.
