Killorglin athlete Brendan is a perfect fit for Irish triathlon team
KILLORGLIN man Brendan Fitzgerald was wearing the green and gold of Ireland recently as he took part in the International Triathlon Union's Long Distance Championship in Belfort, France.
Son of William and Kathleen Fitzgerald, Dunmaniheen, Brendan battled well against tough competition to come second in the Irish team in the 34-39 age group and third in the Irish team overall.
Adverse weather conditions had resulted in the swimming stage being scrapped and so the event became a duathlon which comprised of 9.5km run, 87km bike ride and 20km run.
A former Kerry U21 and Kerry Junior footballer, Laune Rangers clubman Brendan is also a Hogan Cup colleges football champion from 1996 with the Intermediate School in Killorglin.
He has been working as an electrical engineer in the UK for almost five years but is certainly no stranger to distance events in his spare time, having run a sub-three hour Dublin Marathon and completed a 'half ironman' in Majorca last May.
Despite being based in Birmingham, Brendan's Kerry ties remain strong as he is engaged to a Killarney woman.
