Kenmare karate kids to kick up a storm in Sicily
Four Kenmare karate students will represent their county and country at the World Marshal Arts Kombat Federation (WMKF) European Championships next month.
Brother and Sister Luka and Daisy Norman, Gemma Meyer and Melissa Barry, who train under Niall Wright of White Lighting Karate, have been selected to fly the Irish flag at the competition which will see representatives from 25 other countries including England, Scotland, Wales, France, Germany and Italy.
The US are also competing at the championships. Niall is a four time world champion in Kata, Weapons and Tai Chi and is a director of WMKF for Ireland and they issued an invitation to him to bring a team to the championships.
The Kenmare Karate team are the only Irish team competing at the European Championships so it is a huge honour for them. This is also the first time at a Kenmare club has the opportunity to compete in an international competition.
The Kenmare karate students will compete in the Kata category - showcasing a series of moves to defend against an attacker and in the Weapons category. There are 250 categories in total at the competition.
The competition takes place in Palmero, Sicily, on May 10, 11 and 12. The Karate students have been training hard for the competition - including three hours every second Saturday.
"They have worked hard for this chance. It is a fantastic opportunity to meet others and compete against them," said trainer, Niall Wright.
The trip has been made possible by a local fundraising drive which was well supported and for which the team, their parents, and their trainer are most grateful.
A coffee morning and kickathon took place to help raise the funds but donations are still welcome to help fund the cost of the trip. More members are also welcome to join White Lighting Karate. Contact is Niall on 0892436823
