IT Tralee appeals for student beds
College calls on homeowners to rent out rooms
With the Leaving Cert results out next Wednesday - in the midst of a national housing crisis - management at IT Tralee are encouraging homeowners in the town to rent out rooms to students.
When the exam results are released and college places are offered a week later, there is expected to be a scramble for accommodation in Tralee where rental properties are becoming increasingly expensive and hard to come by.
To help meet the expected demand, the Tralee college is encouraging homeowners in Tralee and its environs to avail of tax breaks by renting a spare room to a student.
Under the government's 'Rent A Room' tax relief scheme, property owners can rent out a spare room in their house, tax free, provided the rental income does not exceed €14,000 each year.
A self-contained unit, such as a basement flat or a converted garage attached to a home, can qualify for this relief. Rooms can be leased to a relative provided they are not a child of the homeowner.
"Next week thousands of students will receive their Leaving Certificate results and the rush to prepare for life at third level will begin," said IT Tralee Marketing Officer Ben Slimm.
"Nationally there is a shortage of student accommodation and in order to combat this the government has recently increased the amount you can earn tax-free from renting a room to private tenants in your home," Mr Slimm said.
"This offers a great incentive to rent out your spare room and students can have flexibility in the types of housing they need, sometimes requiring a 12-week semester tenancy or a full academic year, making it easier for people to decide how long they'd like to rent out a room for," Mr Slimm added.
IT Tralee is currently listing all available accommodation available in Tralee for student rental.
Anyone who would like to have a room or property advertised as a student rental option should contact Student Services Officer Mairead Enright on 066 71 45665 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
