Hopes of bringing the Great Southern Trail into North Kerry have been reignited as a firm of consultants begin designing the Kerry leg of the route this week.

Firm RPS are now surveying and designing the 10km greenway walking and cycle track GST extension from Kilmorna into Listowel.

"It's great news and means that it is just a matter of getting the whole thing over the line now," Fianna Fáil Cllr Jimmy Moloney told The Kerryman.

"It's expected the design could be complete by June. Once that's ready the environmental assessment unit of the council will carry out an environmental impact screening to determine if an environmental impact assessment is necessary."

If it is the planning will be sought via An Bord Pleanála. However, it is hoped an assessment won't be required, in which case the Council will pursue part 8 planning in a public consultation process.

"If it's part 8 and all goes according to plan it is foreseeable that work could actually begin by the autumn," Cllr Moloney said. The Kerryman meanwhile understands that landowners are more amenable now to the project.
