Gardaí said that an incident in Castleisland last night was resolved without incident.

Houses in the Market Cross and Tralee Road areas of Castleisland were evacuated at around 11pm on Thursday night as gardaí responded to what they described as an emergency.

The Kerryman understands that the emergency was prompted by fears over a suspect package discovered under a car.

A significant garda presence was witnessed in the vicinity of Castleisland Garda Station as an emergency response was mounted, with members of the armed garda ERU unit and army bomb disposal operatives at the scene.

However, the operation was downgraded as gardaí brought the incident to a safe conclusion and people were allowed back into their homes. Residents had initially relocated to a hotel in the town, before moving onto homes of friends and family during the emergency response.

A spokesperson for the Garda Press Office told The Kerryman this morning (Friday) ‘this matter concluded yesterday evening without incident’.
