Chub slams Healy Rae claim
Archives - November 1982
CHUB O'Connor has described as a "lousy trick" a claim that he and his family are supporting Fianna Fáil candidate John O'Donohue in Wednesday's [November 1982] election.
The claim was made in an interview with Colr. Jackie Healy Rae in The Kerryman last week.
But the veteran Fianna Fáil politician who lost his seat to Labour's Michael Moynihan in 1981, said that he is supporting Deputy John O'Leary in this campaign.
"I take a very poor view of the way that people are using my name, especially people who did everything they could to get rid of me and who now want to use my name for their own benefit," he said.
They have got rid of one of us and now they want to get rid of the other."
Mr. O'Connor said that he had to write to all his friends in Dingle and the Castlegregory area to vote for John O'Leary to ensure that he is elected.
"He could be cut down as low as 4,000 first preferences the way the constituency has been divided between himself and John O'Donoghue."
Mr. O' Connor said that the people of Killorglin would be serviced far more easily from Killarney than they would be from Cahersiveen.
