US-based Thomas Patrick 'Prindiville' looking for Island roots

John Reidy's Castleisland

Kerry in general and Castleisland in particular are historically and rightly accused or credited with harbouring the greatest population of Prendivilles in Ireland.

There are variations of the name and, even here at home, it is surely one of the most misspelled names of all in the locality.

The variations include Prenderville.

I've seen this recently attributed, in the case of another local name, to carelessness or illiteracy - or both - the latter being the only forgiveable of all reasons.

The most famous bearer of the name was, probably, Redmond Garrett 'Mundy' Prendiville, 11 September 1900 - 28 June 1968.

In 1933, at just 32 years of age, Fr Redmond Prendiville became the youngest-ever Catholic Archbishop of Perth in Australia.

Redmond Prendiville also won an All-Ireland senior football medal with Kerry in 1924. The future Archbishop was born in Glenlarhan outside Castleisland in December, 1900.

I got the following by email during the week from a member of the clan and it's self-explanatory. The names associated with the Prendiville clan locally would certainly seem to be matching up well in this man's case.

Here's Thomas Patrick Prindiville's appeal:

"Good day! My name is Thomas Patrick Prindiville and I live in the United States. While on holiday recently, I visited the St Stephen's and John's Church office in Castleisland, and they referred me to you as I am looking for current relatives and more clues to my ancestors.

My great-great-great-grandfather was William Prendiville, and he was born in Castleisland in 1789. He married Ellen Donahue of Cork - not sure of the year.

"His son, my great-great grandfather, was Maurice Prendiville, who was born in Castleisland in January of 1820.

"Maurice was baptized August 14, 1823, in Castleisland.

"He left during the famine and came to the States. Maurice had four siblings: John, born 1825; Mary Bridget, born 1827; William P II in 1832; James, born 1832.

"I am looking for any additional information on William Prendiville (born 1789) or current descendants of his children with Ellen Donahue.

"Any assistance would be certainly appreciated. All the best, Tom Prindiville."
