Santa on the run in Dingle

DINGLE will take on a distinctly festive feel this Sunday as the third annual Dingle Santa Run is hosted in the town.

At 2.30pm a host of red and white clad figures of all ages, shapes and sizes will take to the streets. Setting off from the Marina Centre, they will head out on a 5km jaunt around the Mail Road, Brewery Road, Main Street, Milltown Bridge and a circuit of the breakwater before finishing back at the meeting room at the marina.

Registration is open from 1pm; Santa suits are welcome but not essential and it is requested that all participants at least wear a Santa hat and red clothing.

Proceeds from the run and walk will be divided between the joint organisers: Cumann Ramhaiochta Chorca Dhuibhne and Cumann Rugbai Chorca Dhuibhne.

Participants of all ages are welcome to either run, jog or walk the route.

THE New Year will be welcomed in the most invigorating manner possible by members of the local cumann rothaíochta, Dingle Cycling Club, with a New Year's Day cycle around Slea Head.

This year there is an option of three different distances - 33 miles, 23 miles or eight miles - and all routes will have support vehicles if needed. The proceeds from this year's cycle will go to the Dingle Tidy Towns Group. Refreshments will be available at the Marina Centre for all who take part in the event, which is scheduled to start at 10am.

DINGLE's annual firework display on New Year's Eve has literally drawn thousands to the town over the past decade and this year the excitement has already began to mount ahead of the big night on December 31.

The event is supported by local businesses and to this end a 'race night' will be hosted in Danno's Restaurant & Bar on December 28 to assist in the fundraising effort. Race-card adverts, horse names and race sponsorship is now open at Sheehy's Spar on Green Street, or from any committee member, for those who would like to contribute to the effort.

According to Dingle Business Chamber, the large cost of the fireworks display is difficult to cover and any support is greatly welcomes. As per usual, the race night in Danno's is set to be a great event on the 28th with the action getting underway at 9pm.

The firework display gets underway on New Year's Eve at the Marina at 10pm. A digital countdown will also be projected at the Mall Bridge and at 11.45, the Dingle Fife & Drum Band will lead the New Year's Eve Parade from Bridge Street around town to the Mall Bridge for the final countdown before ringing in the New Year.

After the immense success of last year's Marina Karaoke competition, which saw a wealth of local talent take to the stage, the people in the Marina Inn are gearing up for another run of the competition.

Round one of this epic battle will commence on Friday, December 27 and €500 in cash prizes is up for grabs.
