'Profound sadness' in Emmets on death of the Club's stalwart caretaker Martin

It was with 'profound sadness' that the Listowel Emmets greater family learned of the death of long-serving club groundsman and caretaker Martin Scanlon, just weeks after he was made a special presentation marking his huge contribution to sport in Listowel.

Martin was proposed for the role by the late Tim Kennelly 25 years ago. "Before Martin took on the role the club relied on Eric Browne's sheep to keep the grass cut so the move was on to get things done and Martin was our man," a statement issued by the Club read this week.

"When Martin took a break earlier this year we only began to notice the amount of work he used to do, it now takes four of us to do what he did at his ease! Martin took immense pride in the pitch and facilities at Frank Sheehy Park, he was king of all he surveyed and...kept the club looking its best at all," they wrote.
