Micheál galvanises troops as Tidy Towns launch campaign
It was none other than legendary broadcaster Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh himself who galvanised the proud townspeople of Listowel into action on Thursday at the outset of the Tidy Towns campaign 2017.
Ó Muircheartaigh delivered a speech of great encouragement at the Lartigue to all in town mindful of making another huge impression on the national judges this summer.
Kerry County Council Chief Executive Moira Murrell also spoke at the event, outlining the authority's support for the work of the hugely successful committee and town.
Listowel is, after all, Ireland's Tidiest Small Town for two years in a row with a string of gold medals behind it.
"Mícheál's speech was wonderful, hugely encouraging and we're calling on everyone now to come out and take part in the Tidy Towns campaign," Tidy Towns' member Julie Gleeson said.
"Keeping on top of your own area is vital, whether a business or private residence. We're also back out on the streets, every evening this week and every Tuesday and Thursday thereafter, meeting at St John's at 7pm. We need all hands on deck as there are still big issues with littering, primarily from people flinging plastic bottles and packages into ditches from their cars."
