Countywide: Duagh/Lyre Community Games, Finuge, Kilflynn and Kilmoyley

U11 Mixed Basketball: Last Saturday in Duagh Sports Complex the round robin competition in the U11 mixed basketball took place. Up for grabs were two spots to the County semi finals in Castleisland. The competition saw Duagh/Lyre get five games of ten minutes and their first opponent was Rock St/Caherslee with Duagh/Lyre coming out on top 18-4 a great start. Next up were Milltown/Listry with the Duagh/Lyre side losing by a two baskets a great game and close encounter. Taking on Fossa in the third game and the closest of margins lost by a single basket. The team were thriving on the games and court time and it was smiles all round by the players. The next two games were Currow/Currans and Gneeveguilla where these were stronger in the end Duagh/Lyre gave them a good game. Both Currow/Currans and Gneeveguilla progressing to the finals and receiving bronze and certs.

Team: Jake Heffernan, Jack Collins, James Dillon, Jack O Carroll, Noelle Dillon, Anghradh Cudlipp, Emily Murphy and Aoibhínn Harte. they all gave it everything and this experience will stand to them in their basketball endeavors. Thanks to coach Claire Sheehy.


Training continues on Thursday evening at Duagh NS from 7-8.15pm.

Upcoming events

Receitation takes place in Abbeydorney this Friday night and representing Duagh/Lyre is the lively and witty Hayley McElligott. This is Hayley's first time to take part in this competition in Community Games but not her first to the stage where she performed brilliantly as Frank McCourt last year in Scor. We are looking forward to see what act Hayley will do and we wish her all the best on the night. Solo Singing takes place on Sunday in Abbeydorney, sign in 12.30pm here we have Niamh Buckley U12 and Caoimhe Harte U16. This is a first time for both taking part in the Community Games solo singing and we wish them both the best of luck.

Art and Handwriting will take place this week at both National Schools.

Congratulations to both the under 11 and under 13 quiz teams from Dromclough school who yet again performed so well in the annual Listowel Credit Union quiz.

Heartiest Congratulations to 15-year-old Timmy Dillon,Leam, Kilflynn, a third year student in St Michael's College Listowel., who was named the overall winner of the Lee Strand Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards for his work in the local community and at St Michaels. A fantastic achievement for this young man no job too big or too small for Timmy, and always available to help out in the community. Timmy is a credit to his family and hopefully his example will encourage the youth in the community. Timmy and his family had a wonderful night at Ballyroe Heights Hotel on Friday 30th January for presentation of his award. Over 200 people attended the awards ceremony. There were also twenty merit awards, five distinction awards and the Voluntary Group Award presented on the night. Well done Timmy.

Fitness Friday

Fitness classes every Friday night in St. Columbas Centre, Kilflynn at 7;15p.m with Trevor Horan. All levels of fitness catered for. 6 euro per class or block 4 weeks is only 20 euro.


The winners of the weekly doubles darts tournament in Parker's lounge bar on Saturday 4th February were J.P Twomey and John Byrne who defeated Mark Corkery and Phil Morris in the final. 14 dart players participated. The winners received meat vouchers. The next darts doubles tournament takes place on Saturday night 11th February at 10.30p.m in Parker's Lounge Bar.


Community Care Lotto

There was no winner of the €3600 jackpot for the 30th of January 2017. Numbers drawn by Barney Connell were 7,12,13,23. The two €50 winners were Norma Brassil Lerrig and Tadgh and Darragh Diggins Ballinorig. Bookings for the Community Centre can be made on 087-1611720.

Tidy Towns Kilmoyley

Tidy Towns Kilmoyley have been working hard over the last few weeks and are delighted to see the car park area at the Southern end of the Sportsfield almost complete with over 160 trees and shrubs planted last weekend.

TTK would like to acknowledge and thank the following County Councillors for their contributions to the project over the past two years: Robert Beasley, John Brassil, Toireasa Ferris, Norma Foley, Pat Leahy, Tom Mc Ellistrim, Liam Purtill and Graham Spring. Special thanks to Area Engineer John Fitzgerald who supervised the work. TTK are extremely grateful to the Community Support Fund 2016 for the grant received which was put towards planting and landscaping.

Saol Glan Environmental Lecture Series - TTK are delighted to announce the details of their upcoming lecture which will be held in Kilmoyley Community Care Centre on Tuesday 21st February. Mr Don Nolan of Liscahane Nursery, will give a lecture entitled Gardening in an Atlantic Climate beginning at 7.30pm. Light refreshments will be served. Don't miss this free lecture, which promises to be a very informative and interesting night. All welcome.

The Big Travel Challenge

Last Thursday and Friday pupils and staff of Kilmoyley National School did their bit for the environment by parking their cars and set off to school on foot. For the next two weeks Scoil Naomh Eirc will be encouraging parents and pupils to "Park and Stride" as part of an Taisce's "Big Travel Challenge" which promotes sustainable means of travel. School principal Mrs. Áine Crowe is hoping that by giving the children the opportunity to experience the fun of walking it will encourage them to integrate walking into their everyday lives. The walking to school initiative promotes the health benefits of an active lifestyle and is environmentally friendly.

Credit Union Quiz

Congratulations to Kilmoyley's U.13 Quiz Team (Robert Monahan, David Dineen, Bobby O' Connor and Amy Corridon) who finished third in a nail biting contest at the Credit Union Quiz hosted in Causeway Comprehensive School on Sunday 29th January 2017. The team which to thank school principal Mrs. Áine Crowe and Louise Ryan for their support and encouragement.

It's Not Fair

On Friday 3rd February "Mind the GAP" theatre group visited the pupils in Kilmoyley National School and presented a Circus and Dance based show entitled "It's not Fair", featuring a grandchild having to travel to India to get tea for his Granny. The show highlighted the development themes of, Food Security, Fairtrade, Child Labour and Climate Change in a way that appealed to all the children. The visit came about because the school is currently working towards its sixth Green Flag-Global Citizenship, Litter and Waste. Thanks to An Taisce Green Schools and Irish Aid, Kilmoyley National School was able to avail of this valuable and informative presentation.

Comhaltas Fundraiser

Naomh Breandan Comhaltas will hold a fundraising clothes collection in aid of Fleadh Cheoil Chiarrai on Monday 13th February from 5-8pm at a collection point outside Ardfert Community Centre.

Community Games

Art competition for children from Ardfert and Kilmoyley will take place in Ardfert national school on Wednesday 7th February from 3.15 - 4.15. Please bring own colours.

Futsal training for girls u13 and u15 continues in Ardfert community centre on Sunday evenings 6-7. Shin guards compulsory. Cost €2. The competition for this will take place on 18th February, venue to be confirmed.

Draughts training is on Friday evenings in Ardfert community centre from 7-8. Please bring a draughts board. Cost €1.

Tag rugby training continues at Banna astro turf on Monday evenings from 7-8. This is for both boys & girls u11 and u14.
