170 cars in Rally of Lakes

MOTOR enthusiasts from across the country will descend on Killarney this weekend for the highly anticipated 35th Rally of the Lakes.

A highlight of the Irish motor sport calendar the Rally of the Lakes annually attracts thousands of sporting fans to the town to enjoy some of the best rally drivers in the world.

This year the Rally of the Lakes has received a bumper entry of 170 cars across its four sections which are: international, modified, historic and junior, making it a must see for an serious motor sport enthusiast.

As it traditional the Rally of the Lakes will officially launch with a ceremonial start in the town centre on Friday night where the Killarney and District Motor Club have organised an evening of family fun.

Visitors will get to meet the leading drivers with an evening of music from local bands and DJs planned.

The action proper will get underway on Saturday morning and over the two days drivers will enjoy some of the most spectacular scenery South Kerry has to offer- albeit at some speed.

Stages will take in a host of different areas including Caragh Lake, Kilcummin, Molls Gap and Kilgarvan and will also cross the border including a stage past the newly reopened Top of Coom bar.

The weekend is not all about racing however and Rally HQ at the Gleneagle Hotel has a fantastic line of entertainment planned including magician Keith Barry on Saturday night and comedian Tommy Tiernan on Sunday.
