All set for new adventure...

Down through the years the 'American wake' has been well documented in our emigrant history. But how about an 'African wake?'

Gerald Sugrue from Kenneigh near Waterville , who is well known in Iveragh circles took off for Sierra Leone in Africa on Tuesday week last, taking a long haul flight from Heathrow to Freetown, where he will be based for two years, together with his brother Vincent.

The brothers will be involved in laying of fibre optic cables through a very considerable area and will have to negotiate 70 miles of the Gola Forest in the process.

Gerald held a farewell party, on the Sunday night before his departure, in the Moorings Bar and Restaurant of Portmagee and, never being short of a words, he described his going away party to those present as an 'African wake'

His witty descriptions and insight into the vagaries of human existence will be missed by friends and work colleagues.
