A group of happy and hardy walkers banished the January blues once and for all last Thursday evening as they took part in the final day of their January 31 Day Challenge.

Now an annual challenge - first started by Tralee Colin Aherne a number of years ago -  started on New Years Day; locals were asked to take part in any form of exercise every day for the entire 31 days of January - and in return, they would receive not only the huge positive mental health benefits that come with exercise, but they would also be raising money for three vital charities:

• Irish Cancer Society  and Breast Cancer Awareness

• Crumlin's Childrens Hospital

• Baile Mhuire Day Care Centre

Every day for which they completed their exercise, they would donate €1 to the charity fund.

To finish off the month, close to 300 walkers braved the wind, rain and cold as they set off from the Baile Mhuire Day Care Centre last Thursday for their 5k walk evening where afterwards they received their medals along with tea, coffee and refreshments for completing the challenge.

Overall, €8,200 was raised through over the month which will now be distributed amongst the charities with organiser Caroline Corkery expressing her delight at the success of the campaign.

With many participants stating their intention to continue their new found exercise regime into February, it's safe to say that the campaign has been a success and will no doubt be returning again in January 2020.
