The 2022 South and Mid Kerry Rowing Season finally started this weekend with two regattas run. First up was the Cahersiveen Regatta on Saturday and it was fantastic to see so many crews out on the water and all clubs represented for the first time since 2019.
There was some great races and some fantastic finishes and performances, including the the U16 Ladies of Valentia who caught the eye, as did the Minor Girls from Portmagee putting in a great performance.
Without doubt one of the best performances on the day was the Senior Ladies from Sneem, with nine crews competing they lead from start to finish. The senior men of Callinafercy looked strong and the U14 Boys of Sneem were very focussed and took home the gold, while there was a great race in the U14 Girls with Valentia taking the gold.
Special mention goes to the youngest category with nine boats taking to the waters in a very exciting race and it was Cromane who took the gold ahead of Valentia and Callinafercy.
The Four Oars were put ashore after this race and eyes turned to the Seine Boat where Caherdaniel were on the water for the first time in 10 years and Ballinskelligs, Valentia and Sneem all lined up for the first Seine Boat Race of the season.
Right from the start it was close going down the marina where Sneem were flanked by both Ballinskelligs and Valentia and it was tight rowing for a while but Sneem, with their cox James Gleeson, took the lead and never looked back. This crew looked very impressive on their first regatta of 2022 and won in great style.
Great credit must go to Cahersiveen Rowing Club for running an excellent regatta.

On Sunday all roads lead to Sive Regatta, a rescheduled event, and everyone was looking forward to another great evening of rowing action.
Valentia were simply on fire, taking home seven golds they were the club to beat and were just sheer class on the evening.
In the first race of Minor Boys and Minor Girls they were unstoppable and powered to the buoy and controlled from there.
The Senior Mens Race was a battle royal between Portmagee and Callinafercy and it was Callinafercy who took the gold in the end. Another treat was the Senior Ladies where Valentia held on by a couple of feet from Sneem in a titanic battle to the line.
Meanwhile there was another great battle between Sneem and Valenita in the U14 Boys race with Sneem making it two-in-a-row for their weekend rowing action.
The U14 Girls of Valentia were simply unstoppable with the sheer power from the start of the race to the finish edging out Sneem and Portmagee.
The youngest cateogry didnt fail to give us great excitement with a joint first being awarded to Sive and Valentia with a blanket finish, Callinafercy in second and Cromane third.
All the focus then turned to the Seine Boat where Sneem lead from start to finish and were simply too good on the day from Valentia and Ballinskelligs and Caherdaniel.
Well done to Sive Rowing Club on a very enjoyable regatta and now the focus turns to Sneem next Saturday, July 9,with an early start and the draw for the buoys is 10am, first race off 10.30am with the Minor Girls taking to the water.
This is followed by eight four-oar races with the Seine Boat down for 13.50. No traffic is allowed to the pier, everyone is to park at Sneem Hotel and will be bussed down from there. Please allow plenty of time to be on time for your race. It has been a few years now since we have attended a traditional Sneem Regatta and everyone is looking forward to a great day of rowing action.
