Simply shear brilliance at Top of Coom

Top of Coom this year celebrates the 40th anniversary of its famous sheep shearing extravaganza, and the occasion will be blessed by two international test matches.

The 2018 staging has been announced for July 8 from 9am, and Ireland will go into shearing battle against both Scotland and Wales.

"We are very excited to announce that will be holding two International Sheep Shearing tests," Eileen Creedon told The Kerryman.

"We will also be announcing the Sheep shearing team that will be representing Ireland at the world championships, as well as crowning the All Ireland Champions in each shearing category."

Aside from a look back at rural Ireland and times gone by through the ever popular hand shearing competition and the thrill of the speed competition, history will be made with the event's first ever sheepdog trials, a rare 'first' for such a long-standing event.

There'll even be something for younger visitors and those with less interest in farming matters, with bouncing castles, barbeque, and music all billed for the day's events.

"This is great day to meet people you haven't seen in a while, a day to enjoy the skill of sheep shearing, the entertainment, sharing a laugh and enjoying the company of those you meet. It's rural Ireland at its best," Eileen added.

"We look forward to blowing out our birthday candles".
