North Kerry dance master Jimmy Hickey the subject of new DVD

Riverdance composer Bill Whelan is among the many contributors to a documentary on the dancing art of Listowel's Jimmy Hickey.

Produced by Jimmy Deenihan over the past two years, the DVD will be launched at a special event in the Listowel Arms Hotel on Sunday, October 6, at 7pm by another leading figure of the traditional arts - Siamsa Tíre founder Fr Pat Ahern.

It's a priceless publication for the context it provides the Listowel dance master. It shows how the dance teacher is one of the main talents responsible for keeping the traditions of North Kerry alive by passing them onto younger generations over the years.

"The DVD examines the origins of step dancing in North Kerry and the role that Jimmy Hickey has played and continues to play in passing on this unique style and tradition to present and past generations," Jimmy Deenihan said.

Among the contributors to the DVD is Riverdance composer Bill Whelan; and it also features contributions by Fr Ahern, Dr Catherine Foley - author of Irish Traditional Step Dancing in North Kerry and Step Dancing in Ireland - Siamsa Tíre Artistic Director Jonathan Kelliher and Riverdance lead dancer Patrick O'Mahony. Also included are two of Jimmy's present pupils, Barbara Mulvihill and Patrick Brosnan.

The DVD features Jimmy in both his work place repairing shoes and in the classroom teaching dance. It also includes his meeting with Prince Charles at the Eisteddfod festival in Wales. Jimmy Deenihan said that Jimmy richly deserves this tribute as he has been teaching the unique North Kerry step-dancing style for over 60 years.
