Christy's DVD: a big winner

People from ages six to 90 were at the well-attended launch of Christy Riordan's 'Celebrating 45 Years of Scoil an Ghleanna' DVD on Saturday night, with former pupils from as far away as Cork, Longford, and Dublin calling in for the official bow of what's been described as "a top-class production".

The night featured speeches from Gerardette Kelleher, Anthony O'Sullivan, Sorcha Ní Chatháin, Cllr Norma Moriarty, James Mike O'Sullivan, and Micheál Brennan. They offered unanimous praise for Christy's work.

Though originally approached to put together a visual document of the school's 45-year celebration in Cahersiveen's Ring of Kerry Hotel last year, Christy did all that and much more. Indeed, the DVD is a bilingual  celebration of local culture, sport, pastimes, farming, and more besides, with a wealth of archival material and interviews included as part of the package.

"For example, it features some beautiful violin-playing by Theresa Marie O'Shea, who is only 16, as well as interviews with the likes of Patsy O'Shea, who is 95, and singing by 90-year-old Mary Kennedy," Gerardette Kelleher told The Kerryman.

"It'll be available for €15 at O'Shea's Arro Home and Garden, Deelis Bridge, Cahersiveen; Browne's Foodstore in Ballinskelligs; Madge Murphy of the Community Centre; from Anthony O'Sullivan at (087) 612 5185; and online from Christy himself at

"It was a fantastic night. As one poster put it 'As Gaeilge' on Facebook, "Árd oíche le árd-mhuintir an Ghleanna".
