Brilliant bluegrass family act

Donal Nolan - Listowel

'If angels sing bluegrass, this is what it sounds like' - take it from Keith Lawrence of Bluegrass Notes, St John's forthcoming guests Gold Heart are a touch of class.

Upholding the fairly inarguable fact that families make the sweetest sounds of all, Gold Heart is comprised of sisters Tori on mandolin, Jocey on guitar, Shelby on fiddle with brother Kai on the banjo and dad Trent on the bass.

The Virginians have emerged as one of the great upcoming acts on the country and bluegrass scene in the States, preserving the great sounds of the Appalachians with breathtaking harmonies - well worth checking out on YouTube for all fans of the genre in a position to attend their forthcoming gig at St John's on Thursday, June 7, next (doors open at 7.40pm).

Before then meanwhile, a great line-up awaits all in St John's, as in so many other venues in town, as Writers' Week gets underway. Among the literary highlights of the Week in St John's will be acclaimed British novelist Jon McGregor with an interactive event focusing on his novel Reservoir 13 - on Thursday, May 30, at 5.30pm; British novelist Alex Preston in conversation on Saturday, June 2 at 2.30pm and our very own Mary Kenny with a talk titled 'Am I a Feminist? Are You?' on Sunday at 3.30pm.
