Tralee's canal gates return
The Lock Gates on the Tralee Ship Canal have been replaced
The lock gates on the Tralee ship canal have been replaced and the canal, a popular amenity, is now back in operation.
The historic gates were removed earlier this year for repairs after the mechanism to open and shut the gates became jammed.
While the gates were out of action the canal became tidal and as a result for much of the summer many groups, especially the Tralee rowing club, were unable to use the canal due to low tides and heavy silt buildup.
With the gates back in place the canal will now once again be full of water and groups will be able to use it as and when they please.
The lock gates, which now have a new motorised opening system that replaces the old crank mechanism, will be opened periodically to ensure the canal water is refreshed.
