Woman quizzed over Kinahan cartel money trail

The woman, aged in her 30s, was detained by CAB officials and questioned at Crumlin Garda Station as part of CAB's ongoing investigation into the cartel's enormous wealth.

She was arrested last Wednesday morning and held for a number of hours, before she was eventually released without charge.

David Byrne (33) was shot dead at the Regency Hotel on February 5 this year.

A senior source last night said more arrests and individual tasks will be carried out in the coming months as part of a complex investigation by CAB and other national units investigating the Kinahan cartel's finances.

The woman quizzed last week has no previous convictions and gardai suspect she is one of a number of people with a clean record being used by the cartel to launder the money that they have made as part of their criminal operations.

Last Wednesday's arrest is the latest carried out by gardai investigating the international crime gang.

On September 4, senior Kinahan lieutenant Liam Byrne (36) was questioned by officers in relation to the seizure of over €1m worth of assets.

He was quizzed for a number of hours before being released without charge.

Last March, a large-scale garda operation involving the CAB, the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) and the Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau (DOCB) seized assets belonging to a number of associates of the deadly Kinahan cartel.

Over 30 high-powered cars and motorbikes were recovered along with a considerable amount of cash and other luxury items during the garda operation.

Liam Roe (38), a cousin of Liam Byrne, was arrested the previous month in relation to the same investigation.

However, he was later released without charge while a file is being prepared for the DPP.
