Winter weather comes storming in

Downpours and low temperatures are on the cards as December marks the start of real winter weather.

After experiencing floods late October and some of the warmest weather this year in November, it seems we are finally getting back to normal.

Today, Met Eireann issued a weather warning because of "storm forces in the Irish Sea".

"We don't expect it to last much longer than the next 24 hours, but we will keep our website updated so the latest information is available to people on the coast," said a forecaster.

"At the moment, there have been strong winds that reached storm force on the Irish coasts from Belfast Lough to Wicklow Head to Mizen Head and on the Irish Sea.

"We expect that by tonight they will slightly drop but may still reach a strong gale force."

Met Eireann have warned that temperatures would remain low in coming days and reach freezing levels at night as the week progresses.

Single digit temperatures are expected to prevail throughout the week, with chilly strong winds and some showers.

"On Wednesday, temperatures will fall to 2C or 3C, with a slight ground frost inland," the forecaster said.

"Many places will remain dry on Thursday with sunny spells developing, there will be some showers but mostly on the west of the country.

"Thursday night will be very cold with air temperatures dipping below zero in many areas with a sharp ground frost, perhaps resulting in some icy patches."

While unsettled weather is predicted for the weekend, temperatures are not expected to fall any further and Friday will be mostly sunny.

The AA have warned motorists to remain vigilant and watch out for spot flooding on roads.

"Only drive through water if you know that it's not too deep for your car.

"Test your brakes as soon as you can after leaving the water," a spokesman said.
