Ukraine put end to Irish U-19 hopes

IRELAND'S U19 side have lost out on their slim chance of making it to the European Championship finals in July following a 3-0 defeat to Ukraine yesterday.

A loss to Portugal, hosts of the four-team mini qualifying tournament, left Paul Doolin's men with only a remote hope of making it into the finals in Estonia but that comfortable win for Ukraine has ended the Irish dream.

"Ukraine were much better than us in the second half and in all honesty they could have beaten us by five goals," said Doolin. "The game was close in the first half but then we became ragged and I can have no complaints."

Aston Villa man Samir Carruthers (pictured) misses the final group game against Israel through suspension as he was sent off for a second bookable offence.
