UK fears as Yahoo moves HQ to Dublin
PLANS by online giant Yahoo to transfer operations to Dublin looks set to go ahead despite the British government raising concerns over the move's implications for its surveillance laws.
British Home Secretary Theresa May is understood to have called the emergency meeting with Yahoo bosses on behalf of UK security agencies who are concerned by the sudden loss of access as a result of Yahoo coming under Irish law.
Under controversial anti-terrorism laws, British agencies can force tech companies to reveal data they hold on their servers including emails and other online communications.
REGULATIONS
Yahoo is planning to move its Headquarters for Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) to Dublin.
The company has acquired part of the Point Village premises as its new base.
Irish data protection laws are more in line with European regulations that the controversial British laws.
Yahoo has not acknowledged the "big brother" approach of the British government as a reason for the move here but says Ireland is the home of many international companies and Yahoo will now come under Irish laws.
The company said the move is for business reasons.
