Tell us our children's unit is safe Dr Reilly

Cormac Murphy

A HOSPITAL action group is seeking a face-to-face meeting with Health Minister James Reilly to copper-fasten assurances that a children's unit will not be downgraded.

The Midland Regional Hospital in Portlaoise had been the subject of rumour and speculation that its 24-hour emergency department was under threat.

SERVICE

However, the Save Portlaoise Hospital Action Group said it subsequently received guarantees from the Government that the department would retain its current level of service.

But speaking to the Herald, the group's Grainne Boland said they are "waiting to meet with Minister Reilly" to get renewed pledges that there will be no curtailment.

Already, nine beds in the hospital's paediatric unit have closed due to staffing difficulties. Ms Boland said they have been told the beds can be reopened when necessary.
