Syls Man' up against Fins as Ballinteer bag 'C' success
DUBLIN U16 HURLING SHIELD FINALS
A goal by substitute Cathal Manning proved pivotal as St Sylvester's overcame a battling Fingallians by 2-9 to 1-6 in their Dublin Under 16 'B' Hurling Shield Final in Bridgefield last Saturday afternoon.
In a high-quality encounter, Manning's late strike eventually put paid to a brave Fingallians effort in which Cian O'Brady and Jake Murphy shone in the away defence.
A goal by TJ Howard was just reward for the efforts of the Swords lads but they struggled to make consistent headway against a superbly organised home defence.
Niall McCann was brilliant throughout for the hosts, who were also grateful for the foundation provided at midfield by Bryn Redmond.
Eoin Cooney worked tirelessly in attack for the Malahide outfit, who confirmed their win thanks to a positive contribution from substitute Conor O'Byrne.
Ballinteer St John's claimed the Dublin Under 16 'C' Shield title after their hard-fought 3-8 to 2-8 success over liffey Gaels at Dolphin Park last Saturday lunchtime.
The foundation for their victory lay in the defensive excellence of Stephen Mulvaney, Ciarán Rafter, Tadhg Brennan and Brian Smith.
In attack, Barry Mannion, Ben Broderick, Cian O'Dwyer and Seán Casserley all landed crucial scores as St John's eked out a narrow three point success.
There was another enthralling clash in Drimnagh as Na Fianna B pipped Good Counsel by 3-9 to 3-8 on the Galtymore Road to claim the 'D' Shield.
The game was closely contested throughout with the standard of hurling high despite the unfavourable weather conditions.
indebted
The visitors were indebted to very impressive midfield performances from Matt Treacy and Oisín Fitzgerald with the former accruing 1-3 while Fitzgerald also chipped in with three points.
Two of the pivotal scores were provided by wing-forward Matthew Murchan while Conor Moroney worked feverishly in addition to striking a fine point as the game ebbed and flowed throughout.
Na Fianna were also well served by the likes of Daire Bourke-Boyle at wing-back, Luke McArthur, Eoin McLoughlin, Adam Breen and Fionn Murray.
The hosts, while disappointed to lose by such a narrow margin, can take huge pride from their efforts with Eoin Lightfoot typifying their talent with a strong showing at full-back.
Luke Dolan and Josh O'Brien played important roles in central positions with the goals coming through Shane McGuirk, Adam Quinn and the excellent Paul McDermott.
However, the visitors came through with John Tierney, Donal Ryan, Sam Fraughan, Eoin O'Dwyer, Colm Gray, Tadhg Potter Ted Regan and Paddy Gleeson to the fore.
The 'A' decider maintained the trend of all the other shield finals with St Vincent's doing just enough to account for Faughs by 2-7 to 1-6 in Tymon North.
