Students have no answer to St Vincent's

ST VINCENT'S 4-11, UCD 1-12

ST VINCENT'S produced a stunning opening quarter in accounting for UCD in their Evening Herald Dublin Senior Championship fourth round tie at O'Toole Park yesterday.

Three goals from Ciarán Dorney, Tomás Quinn and Pádraig Lee laid the foundation for the Marino men.

The students battled gamely throughout but their defensive frailties were exposed. Laois senior Donie Kingston was a quiet figure at centrefield and then superbly marshalled by Eoin Brady when redeployed at full-forward.

Vinnies blitzed the students early on with Dorney following up well to net in the seventh minute after Quinn was denied by Michael McGinley and Dorney added a point soon after as his side attacked incessantly, creating scoring opportunities at will.

Dorney returned the compliment to Quinn in the 11th minute for Vincent's second goal and Lee's goal six minutes later, once again availing of more than generous UCD defending, all but ended the tie as a contest.

A superbly converted Cathal Kenny penalty before the break gave the students some hope and points by the excellent Niall Kilroy had the deficit down to six points by the 37th minute.

However, quick thinking from Diarmuid Connolly as he intercepted a McGinley kick-out pushed Vinnies 10 clear in the 42nd minute and the 2009 All-Ireland champions saw out the remainder with comfort.
