AN EXCHANGE student committed a sex attack against the 14-year-old son of his host family, it has been claimed.

The Middle Eastern student, who is in his 20s, went in to the boy's bedroom in the middle of the night and committed a sex act over him, a court heard.

The defendant is in Ireland to study English. He was staying with a family in south Dublin to improve his English at the time of the alleged assault.

A court heard the young man is being sponsored to study in Ireland by his embassy and is also receiving financial assistance from them.

The defendant appeared before Tallaght District Court charged with one count of sexual assault on a 14-year-old boy.

The alleged incident took place at the victim's home in south Dublin on July 14 last.

Outlining the allegation for the judge, Garda Sergeant Bernard Jones said the defendant was staying with the victim and his family at the time of the assault.

Sgt Jones claimed the defendant went into the boy's bedroom in the middle of the night and commited a sex act on himself.

The sergeant said a file had been sent to the DPP but directions were outstanding in relation to the charge.

Judge James McDonnell adjourned the matter for four weeks to a date in November, for DPP's directions.
