Student hurled abuse after drinking all day

Alan Long (24) intervened in the friend's arrest during a public-order disturbance at Connolly Station, Dublin District Court heard.

Judge Ann Ryan adjourned the case against him for the production of a restorative justice programme report.

Long, with an address at Briarfield Walk, Kilbarrack, pleaded guilty to public intoxication and causing a breach of the peace on May 13 last year.

Garda Thomas Power told the court gardai were dealing with a public-order incident at the train station at 7pm when the defendant intervened. The accused posed "no real problem" to the gardai after he was arrested.

The defendant apologised for his unacceptable behaviour on the day, his solicitor Matthew de Courcy said.

He had been drinking all day and had also taken cannabis and he simply lost the head.

A friend was arrested and he got involved.

The accused had worked for a gas company after completing his Leaving Certificate, then returned to education to do a third-level course. He had taken a year out, was currently on social welfare and trying to get experience in computers.

Long was prepared to work with the probation service if there was any possible alternative to convictions, Mr de Courcy said.

Judge Ann Ryan adjourned the case to a date in March.

"You must realise the effect that this type of behaviour has on other people," she said.
