Young sports writers' contest in honour of Con

BUDDING young sports journalists are being encouraged to enter a writing competition, set up in honour of Herald columnist Con Houlihan.

Writers' Week in Listowel have announced a new Young Sports Journalist Award, which will see the winner receive €500.

The Acorn Life Con Houlihan Young Sports Journalist of the year competition is open to those under 18 years.

Organisers said that "the submission can be a match report, profile of a sports person or an interview with someone in sports".

Writers' Week said that they "are delighted to have an opportunity to acknowledge the great Kerry Sports Writer Con Houlihan".


They also hope to "encourage young people to take their inspiration from the uniqueness of his insightful writing and hopefully one day follow in his giant footsteps".

The winner of the competition will receive a prize of €500 which will be presented by President Michael D Higgins on the first night of the event on May 30.

This year the Listowel event takes place from May 30 to June 3.

Entries for the competition should be sent to Young Sports Journalist Competition, Writers' Week, The Square, Listowel, Co Kerry before March 31.

The submission can be up to 500 words.
