Welsh and Scots join for 2020

IRELAND COULD end up as co-hosts of the European Championship finals in 2020 as part of a joint bid with Scotland and Wales.

The FAI today confirmed that they have expressed an interest in hosting the Euros, just a few years after a joint Scottish/Irish bid to host Euro 2008 was rejected by UEFA.

Interested parties have until midnight tonight to lodge a bid with UEFA for the 2020 tournament. And while Turkey are favourites to win the race, a pan-Celtic bid involving Ireland, the Scots and Welsh could be a runner.

“We have submitted an expression of interest but it is purely an expression of interest before the deadline,” an FAI spokesman confirmed today. “It's at a very preliminary stage but we have been invited in by Scotland and Wales.
