I lost a good friend earlier on this week with the news of Vintage Crop's passing at the Irish National Stud.
Thankfully I was only over to see him a couple of weeks ago when I was doing some television work and recapping the Melbourne Cup and he was standing behind me.
I suppose he was starting to look his age but he was about 120 in human terms and I don't think I'll be looking as well when I reach his age!
It was nice to be able to get to see him reasonably late and he was in good health and he passed away after a good life and a long and enjoyable retirement.
We had some very good days and memories together and we created history.
His last run when he finished third in the Melbourne Cup was an unbelievable run and possibly the best ever run of his life. He was just getting a bit arthritic and he couldn't start his races well enough - it took him a while to warm up - but he really ran home and tried his heart out that day. That was a real brave and tough performance.
We won a couple of Irish St Leger's, a couple of Curragh Cup's and a Saval Beg and of course a Melbourne Cup. I was just pleased to have got up with him so recently and he'll be fondly remembered by all associated with him.
