U-19s through after draw with Germany

PAUL Doolin's Irish Under-19s played out an impressive 2-2 draw with Germany in Luxembourg with both sides advancing to the elite phase of qualification for the European Championships.

The Germans were two up within half an hour with Liverpool's €1m summer signing Samid Yesil grabbing the second for the team managed by former Spurs star Christian Ziege. The Irish battled back with Sam Byrne grabbing a goal back after 58 minutes and St Patrick's Athletic star Ryan Coombes equalised for the boys in green minutes later after being introduced as a substitute.

Both sides had already advanced to the elite phase of qualifying next spring but after the senior sides embarrassing capitulation on Friday night pride was at stake and goalkeeper Ian Lawlor pulled off some fine saves late on to see Doolin's men finish the first phase of qualification unbeaten.
