No beating the '76 finalBernard senior says conquering Kerry in All-Ireland decider was best day
THE Brogan name is one of the most famous in Gaelic games. It was Bernard senior who really put the surname into the spotlight back in the Seventies.
The dynamic St Oliver Plunkett's/Eoghan Ruadh man won three All-Ireland medals (1974, 1976, 1977) and six Leinster titles (1974-79) when Heffo's men and Mick O'Dwyer's Kerry dominated the footballing landscape.
He also was also an integral part of the victorious National League teams of 1976 and 1978 and he was recognised for his performances with an All Star at midfield in 1979.
His three sons, Alan, Bernard and Paul, were part of Dublin's All-Ireland title success in 2011, while Alan (2011) and Bernard (2010) are both former Footballer of the Year recipients.
Bernard senior's brother, Jim, won an All-Ireland in 1977 as well as being a selector for the Dubs' senior success in 1995 and recent All-Ireland U21 successes.
GREATEST MOMENT IN A DUBLIN JERSEY?
Winning the All-Ireland in 1976. I was injured for the '74 final but I played in '76.
BEST INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE?
A game against Offaly in the Leinster championship in 1974. Offaly were the Leinster champions that time and I came on as a sub and I had a very good game. It was my first championship game but it was a big game for me.
TELL US ABOUT THAT GOAL AGAINST KERRY IN 1977?
In terms of big scores I suppose that's what I'm best known for is scoring that goal. It was a big goal because I suppose it was the one that secured the victory. Dave Hickey got a goal before me but the one I scored put them away, so to speak.
BEST CLUB MEMORY?
We won the intermediate championship in 1975, which was a big thing for the club. But we never won a senor championship or a senior league. There was a few close shaves alright but we never got over the line.
BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT IN FOOTBALL?
The beating we received from Kerry in 1978 All-Ireland SFC final (5-11 to 0-9). We were leading Kerry after 25 minutes but then it just went against us. We didn't expect it to happen like that and it was really disappointing.
THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR CAREER?
BEST PLAYER YOU PLAYED WITH?
I would say Brian Mullins was the most effective player but the best footballer was probably David Hickey.
Jack O'Shea (Kerry).
WOULD YOU SAY THE GAME IS BETTER NOW OR DURING YOUR ERA?
The game is very different now. The guys are fitter now, their training is more game-orientated. There was tactics in our day but it's gone very tactical now. It can destroy it as a spectacle but it also makes it very interesting.
HOW DO YOU THINK DUBLIN WILL PERFORM IN THE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP?
I think they are playing very well and obviously they had a great league campaign. The thing about this Dublin team is that they are competing in every game they play. That doesn't mean they will win an All-Ireland, but the team that beats them will have to be a good team.
