Zambra issues body blow to Derry title bid

DERRY City's Premier Division title march ground to a shuddering halt with a 1-1 draw at home to lowly Bray Wanderers.

The Brandywell men suffered an injury setback on 10 minutes when Eddie McCallion, who was struggling with a calf problem going into the game, was replaced by Ruairi Harkin.

City started to up the tempo on 24 minutes but Ruaidhri Higgins' 25-yard shot flew well wide. Soon after, another long-range effort from Kevin Deery failed to trouble Darren Quigley in the Bray goal.

Derry centre-back Stewart Greacen had the first shot on target on 39 minutes, but it was straight at the keeper.

The visitors took the lead on 41 minutes when Gary Dempsey's corner was flicked on by Dean Zambra and, despite Gerard Doherty's best efforts, the referee's assistant flagged to signal the ball had crossed the line.

Just after the hour, City brought on Mark Farren for McEleney and they were back on level terms on 75 minutes when substitute Emmett Friars' long-range drive flashed past Quigley.

Derry had a great chance to take the lead soon after when Higgins' astute pass released Eamonn Zayed, but the league's top scorer saw his low drive from a tight angle saved by Quigley.

Zayed went close again on 81 minutes but Derry were denied the three points.
